When the following reaction occurs, it is called an acid-base reaction. It dictates the formation of a cation in a solution or anion:
H+ + Ca2+
This occurs in strong acids and bases, which are only ordinary substances. It plays a vital role in determining the pH of your body’s cells.
The process is named H+ + Ca2+ because it occurs when magnesium or calcium is present as an alkaline element. When this happens, it results in the formation of a cation and anionic molecule (or complex). This includes hydrogen and calcium carbonate, respectively.
An example of this reaction is what happens when we take baking soda and add water to get out the H+ + Ca2+ content.
Know your ions
As mentioned earlier, salt is a powerful compound. Just like the food we eat, the ones we create with salt contain vitamins and minerals.
These include potassium, sodium, and chloride. All of these elements work together to make things more stable or to replace something else that was lost when something is cooked.
Potassium ions are found in very small amounts in food but are highly concentrated in cooking herbs and spices. This is why most people do not notice that they are eating more than they should when dishes containing herbs and spices are prepared correctly.
Sodium ions also play a role in cooking but less so in recipes where no substitution of ingredients is made. This is because many people do not consume enough of this vitamin or due to lack of using replacement agents for it.
Know your acids/bases
As mentioned earlier, bases can form salts with other substances. These include:
Calcium carbonate (CaCO3)
Sodium carbonate (NaCO3)
These compounds aren’t very common, but they do occur in many foods, from fruits and vegetables to grains. When these compounds do form salts with other substances, the result is called an acid/base. This can create some interesting results in your body, as the two compound egres create powerful shifts in your body’s pH.
An example of an acid/base is Magnesium Chloride, which comes into contact with the body as a base to produce important minerals like magnesium and sulfur.
Solve for the unknown variable
In the case of blood and blood components, answer may be: H+ + CO2 −. While this reaction is believed to occur in the presence of oxygen, it can also happen without oxygen as a source.

Choose a salt name
When a salt has a generic name, it is possible to buy a salt that matches the name of the generic one. For example, when you buy baking soda, you are able to purchase one with the term sodium bicarbonate.
This is important when you look for your salt because there are specific names for every level. For example, your standard-quality baking soda may have the name sodium bicarbonate. This is because there is more to it than just baking powder!
There are some salts that have different names for levels, like table salt versus rock-hard sodium chloride. Either can be used in cooking, but people typically prefer the softer and fluid-transportable product called table salt.
Match the anion with the cation
When the following reaction occurs, it is time to determine what the anion and cation are. The anion is a negative charge, while the cation is a positive charge.
The anion of hoo−+ (+) or −(−) corresponds to a negative charge, while the cation corresponds to a positive charge.
The corresponding cations are hoo− or −(−) charges.
As stated before, this happens when there is too much hydrogen ion in solution. The excess of hydrogen ion causes strong chemical reactions, such as substitution and elimination, which can be dangerous.
Match the acid with the base
When the above-mentioned reaction occurs, it is important to remember which acid or base was used to form the conjugate base.
There are two forms of this reaction. The first occurs when the conjugate acid is an organic acid such as hydrochloric or hydrobromic acid. The second occurs when the conjugate base is an organic base such as sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide.
An example of an organic acid that can form both forms of this reaction is phosphoric acid. Since it can, in some cases, it is important to know which type of reaction occurs when a pickling agent is needed.
Write the formula for the salt
When the following reaction occurs, it is time to ask yourself what the salt formula is. This is due to the salt forming in a different way than the acid and base forms.
The form of the salt that forms when there is an attack by anion and cation is called a solid state Salt. This form exists in both natural and artificial materials, such as table salt and some spices.
As an example, let’s say we wanted to make a salty snack treat that had white chocolate chips as one of the ingredients. We would probably use dried fruits or vegetables as components of our creation.
Since we do not want our mixture to give us bad reactions or sickness, we choose to use only table salt in our mixture.
