Which Method Is Used By A Pat-enabled Router To Send Incoming Packets To The Correct Inside Hosts?

A packet is a unit of information, and an individual packet is a request for information or data. Modern networks have many external devices that can request data or information from the network, making it a very useful tool.

When a network device such as a switch or router receives an incoming packet, it either forwards the request to another device on the network that wants the same thing, or it requests data or information from an inside host.

The inside host may be another router on the same network, an external device connected to the home network via a cable, radio transmission, or online delivery.

Static address mapping

When an inside host wants to connect to a domain, they type their domain’s address into their internet connection. The router automatically translates that address into the internal network’s network and sends packets to that network.

This static address mapping method is useful when you want your internal network to be able to connect to other networks, like the internet. For example, you want your employees at your workplace able to access the internet through a particular router, but you do not want them able to connect directly to another device.

This method works for both pat-enabled routers and non-pat-enabled ones.

Dynamic address mapping

Dynamic address mapping is a method used by pat-enabled routers to send incoming packets to the correct inside hosts. With this method, an outside device can dynamically map a network interface on the router to an internal host.

By using dynamic address mapping, an outside device can configure multiple external IPs and/or domain names for one device. Then, those external devicescan assign specific subnet masks and routers to determine where the packet goes.

Dynamic address mapping was first introduced inpat-enabled routers in 2010, but has fallen out of favor as more modern smart devices have higher tech features than older models do. Most modern smart devices have at least DHCP servers that can handle dynamic addressing, making it unnecessary to use this method.

Port translation

Another method used by a pat-enabled router to send packets to the correct inside hosts is port translation. This method changes the protocol used for communication between an outside device and an internal device.

With port translation, an external computer can use its network interface card (NIC) to connect to the router and then use a standard internet protocol (IP) address to send packets to an internal host.

This allows the computer to read files, install software and_or_uninstall software, or access the internet!

By using this method, both the pat-enabled router and the external computer must be updated in firmware so they understand which internal devices they can connect too.

NAT

When a virtual private network (VPN) is used, the inside host is connected to the Internet by a public internet connection.

This means that any packets sent from the inside host to the outside world are first passed through a network device, such as a router or bridge.

Any packets sent from the outside world to the inside host are then translated into compatible network protocol format and sent towards its intended destination.

This happens because many applications require foreign networks and protocols to be translated into something they can understand. For example, web browsers require http and ftp addresses to be converted into something resembling their original formats, so they can connect to websites or files.

NAT allows this trickiness to happen in different ways. Some devices create new internal IP addresses for traffic going through them, while others simply add an external one without modifying existing ones. Both of these methods add extra steps to PAT testing, making it more difficult to identify true inside hosts with VPNs.

PAT

Another method used by a pat-enabled router to send packets to the correct inside hosts is called PAT. This mode is enabled by the PAT method flag in the router configuration.

In PAT mode, packets are first sent to the local network’s protection domain, where they are inspected and if necessary, allowed into the local subnet. If it passes this check, then it is forwarded to its intended host through your Internet connection.

This helps prevent malicious hosts on your network from flooding your internal hosts with traffic. By preventing certain traffic from going out of your network, attackers are less likely to respond quickly or efficiently due to overhead.

Pat-enabled Routers: Once a pat-enabled router has configured its pat mode flag in its configuration, you can enable PAT on your device via a series of simple commands. These commands can be found under the ‘admin’ tab and include ‘show packet analysis’ and ‘set packet analysis’.
