If you are tuning a guitar, you need to know how long the strings are when they are unfingered. The average length of a guitar string is 0.73 meters, or 27 inches. This is an easy measurement to take with a tape measure.

To calculate the pitch of the note, you need to know how many waves propagate down the string in a given amount of time. For example, if it takes one second for nine waves to propagate down the string, then the frequency (or pitch) of the note is nine cycles per second, or nine Hz.

You can find out how many waves propagate down the string by measuring its length and then doing some math (fun, right?).

Determine what frequency it plays

To determine what frequency the string plays, you need to know how long it is. You also need to know what note it plays with the chord you are trying to make.

A guitar string twice as long will sound a note one octave higher. A guitar string half as long will sound a note one octave lower.

To find the length of the string, measure it with a ruler. Most guitar strings are around 0.73 meters (28 inches) long. Some may be slightly shorter or longer depending on the guitar and tuning.

To find what note it plays, look up what notes make up that chord and see which one is closest to the sounding pitch of the string. For example, if the string sounds like an E above middle C (330 Hz), then it is a E thirdstring-fourth position fingering on the guitar.

That’s pretty neat, but what does a guitar string have to do with math?

Everything we experience in life is based on certain properties or laws of nature. For example, the fact that everything is made up of molecules is a fundamental property of reality.

Similarly, the laws of physics (like gravity) are fundamental properties that determine how everything in the universe behaves. Even something as seemingly simple as why it’s harder to pull one hand away from something when the other hand is pulling it toward itself is due to a law of physics. It’s called “inverse pull.”
