Being able to capture beautiful, artistic images is one of the most important skills you can have as a photographer.
Most people who want to hire you cannot write their own letter or tell someone they meet what kind of person they are looking for, so they’ll just keep looking until they find someone that fits.
That doesn’t always work, though! Sometimes there’s no need to be too picky. By being very selective at times, it’s impossible to get some great jobs.
As photographers, we must know how to separate those that will pay us from those that won’t. In this article, I’ll go over some ways to develop your photography business without wasting time on projects that won’t reward you.
I’ll also talk about some easy ways to add new clients through marketing.
Build a website

A few years ago, having your own site was not easy for most people. You needed expensive software or someone who could help you design it yourself.
Now, there are many free hosting sites where you can put up your photography business-face! All of these sites give you an account that allows you to create pages, upload images and videos, and link them together to make your website.
Many of these sites also offer ways to connect your social media accounts to your site, so your followers can now access all of your content in one place.
Find out what clients are looking for
As we already discussed, being able to take good pictures is one of the most important skills you can have as a photographer.
But it’s not just about taking pretty photos — it’s also about knowing how to sell them. It’s about creating images that appeal to your potential client.
It’t about giving them what they want, it’s about selling them something.
As a beginner or even experienced photographer, there’s always something new you can learn. And while some things may be totally unrelated to photography, others will bring in money.
In this article I’m going to talk about one such thing – how to get more clients by understanding what makes people hire photographers.
Become a digital photographer

As we already mentioned, being a good photographer comes down to having a passion for taking pictures. But with the availability of so many easy ways to take photos these days, it is very hard to know what really resonates with people.
Running into more challenges than ever before, how can you find your voice as a photographer if no one else has that same voice?
The solution to this is simple: become a professional digital photographer! There are plenty of free and paid resources available online and in-store to learn all about photography. You do not need to have formal training as a photographer to work professionally, but doing at least some research will help you understand the basics and start creating beautiful images.
There are even apps and software that make producing great photographs easier every day!
By investing in yourself as an artist, you’ll be setting yourself up for success as a creative entrepreneur. Starting off by offering low cost or free photographic services will give you exposure and clients, while still putting quality content out there.
Encourage friends to start a business

As we mentioned before, being able to take good pictures is one of your strengths as a photographer. But having clients comes down to how you market yourself and what you are willing to do to get there.
Running a photography business isn’t easy, which is why most people don’t want to do it. It takes time, effort, and lots of repetition – not something many people have in plentiful supply.
But if you’re dedicated to becoming successful as a professional photographer, then you need to learn how to get more customers. You will eventually run out of things you can offer potential clients, so you’ll need to figure out ways to make them feel like they’ve given up their money well worth it.
I’m going to share with you some tips that will help you launch into action and begin developing your photography business.
Create a marketing plan

A few years ago, there was very little you could do to make money as a photographer unless you were willing to invest in expensive equipment or go into high-end commercial photography.
These days, though, it’s possible to create your own studio space with just a smartphone! And while professional grade lighting is still out of reach for most people, creating engaging, aesthetically pleasing images is within every person’s grasp.
What makes an image beautiful isn’t about having lots of fancy gadgets, it’s being able to use what you have effectively. The more accessible photo-taking technology gets, the easier it becomes to hone your craft.
In this article, I will talk about some ways that you can market yourself as a photographer and how to get clients. But first, let’s look at why it’s so hard to earn a living as a creative entrepreneur in the internet age.
Why it’s so difficult to make a living as a creative entrepreneur in the 21st century
There are several reasons why it’s harder than ever to succeed as a creative freelancer in the era of the 24 hour news cycle and social media.
But one of the biggest ones is this: other professionals are now offering their services close enough to free that they’re taking away business from those who aren’t.
Set your prices

As mentioned earlier, being able to capture beautiful pictures is only half of getting into business as a photographer. The other important part is having someone hire you to take their picture. This can be done by setting your fees according to what you feel your services are worth and then asking for them!
Running out of money is never fun, but if you’re willing to share your expertise and knowledge, you will find that people are more than happy to pay you for it. Having a general idea of how much photos cost average market standards, do some research and figure out where your skills lie so you can price yourself accordingly.
Don’t start too low or too high because this could deter potential clients from hiring you! An easy way to get started pricing your service is to divide your total monthly income (what you make per month) by how many hours you work in a month to determine how much you should charge for your time. Subtract this number form one dollar and there you have your starting price!
That said, don’t underestimate the value of your services! A lot of people who want a photo taken enjoy doing it themselves, and thus won’t spend very much money on it. If you know any photographers or have a friend who knows about photography, see what they paid for theirs and use that as a reference.
Be honest with clients

As a photographer, your success will depend on two things: how well you connect with your customers and how well you market yourself.
Your audience can be one person or many people, but no matter who they are, they’ll want to work with someone they trust. They’ll want to believe that you’ll treat them like friends and not just because you’re paying their bills, which is why being authentic and straightforward is important.
It’s also worth noting that while getting paid to take pictures is always going to be more popular than sitting at home doing nothing, most photographers don’t make enough money to pay the rent. A lot of us struggle financially our whole lives!
That’s the reality of the profession we’ve chosen, so try not to get too focused on the next big payday when it comes to investing in your business. More importantly, invest in yourself by reading books, listening to podcasts and looking into different ways to improve your craft as a photographer.
If you’re struggling to find time to do any of those, then consider working part-time instead of full-time. It’ll give you more flexibility which may help you achieve your financial goals later on.
Offer your services for free

This is one of the most important things you can do as a photographer who wants to grow their business. Sure, it costs you nothing to take pictures, but it takes more than that to see results in growth.
Photographers spend money trying different marketing strategies and none work consistently. It’s hard to invest in advertising when you don’t have the resources to back yourself up, so you stay stuck.
By offering your service for free you are taking care of all of this for other people. You are creating content they can use to showcase their products or sites and developing a relationship with them at the same time!
This is especially helpful if you want to try out your own creative vision. We’ve all heard stories of artists who spent years struggling paying bills while keeping themselves inspired because they wanted to show what they loved doing.
