assertiveness is a powerful tool that can change things around you. You can choose to be more confident in almost every situation, or you can learn how to be more assertive.
Assertiveness is not about being aggressive, it is about using words to make a point. It is using the right words to say what you mean and nothing else.
When you are more assertive, you are saying what you want to mean less of a statement and less of a command, which is more your style. You are saying what you want to be heard by and for yourself only.
It’s easy to be passive when someone else’s behavior makes you feel like they don’t care and they do not ask me anything I do, so I will tell them for me. It makes me feel like I am not important enough to ask myself questions and take steps to change my life!
There are many ways to be assertive and many levels of confidence, so it does not need to be done all at once.
Learn to separate emotions from facts
When you’re speaking to a group, or someone is listening to you, you should be able to identify their emotions and facts in order to effectively address their concerns.
People can tell when you are stressed, and they can tell when you are upset, but they may not know the truth. When you are confident in what you are saying is the truth, people can feel more relaxed and confident in what they say.
When you are speaking to an individual, there may be more factors that go into whether or not he or she believes what you say. You should be able to appeal to an individual’s beliefs if necessary.
If your statement is one that might make someone else feel uncomfortable, then maybe it is time to stop and think about what exactly your message is supposed to be before making any changes thereto.
Be direct with people
Being direct with people means being honest, without being angry or mean. It also means not rewording things to make them more pleasant, friendly, or enjoyable.
It also mean choosing the right words for your situation and your audience. For example, choosing to be direct with people in situations where you are not nervous or shy is a good idea.
Being direct can be hard when you are trying to choose between two words but they do not fit: Confidentially, for example, where someone would be very careful about what they say because of the risk of being found out; or Not Delegitimizing Someone When They Do Not Degrade Themselvesantageating on Someone Else Which Leads to Excessive Self-centering.
But it is important to know which words you have in your repertoire of confidence phrases and identities.
Express your opinions clearly
Although there is a etiquette for different kinds of statements, most of the time we are talking about questions and/orComments? and/or/s? and/or/?.
When you ask for information or a solution, you want to be specific about what you want to happen and when you want it to happen. You want your words to be strong enough to carry your request but not so strong that people cannot understand you.
If you ask for help on an internet forum, make sure you use a provider- provided internet is available when you need it. Make sure your friends and foes are clear enough so that someone else can hear you- if they reply, they should be able to make their message be heard by you.
Listen to others closely
When you listen with your mind, your listening affects your own mind and emotions. You believe what you are hearing and feeling is important and valuable. This helps others in the future to listen to you with respect.
When you do not listen with your eyes, gestures, and voice, it can be harder for others to understand. You are missing out on confidence and authority. When people follow your orders because they do not understand them, it becomes hard to trust them.
When you do not listen carefully, this can lead to frustration or tears. It is better to cover up when someone gives you the worst treatment than to let them make you feel less important.
Listening can be a littleTarasalking at times, but it is worth the effortIf you will spend some time paying attention.
Be consistent with your actions
When you speak your mind, you need to be consistent with your actions. You can be assertive in one situation and in a different situationousand ways.
In one situation, you may want to say something negative or confrontational but in a different situation, you may want to say something else or be more conciliatory.
Consistency is key when it comes to conflict resolution. If you need to contact someone for business purposes, you should always call or email them again if the gap between calls closes and they are available.
If you need to speak directly with someone, you must call or send an email that states what problem you are having and why you feel it is necessary to talk directly. Be confident in your message and ask questions if needed.
Create clear personal boundaries
When you’re trying to communicate your own ideas, you need to set some limits on how else people can connect to you.
You don’t know what else people are going to say to you, and you don’t want to compromise your privacy when you’re trying to find a business partner or a job.
You also have a responsibility to people around you when it comes to private communication. If someone messages you but doesn’t give them any other address or phone number, there might be a reason for that.
It might be that person’s personal boundary has been set and they are unable to change it, or they just don’t feel comfortable enough about the person they are communicating with to add another point of contact.
Whether it’s a fear of being approachable or being shy, there is definitely an art of assertive communication that ranges from simple but true words and deeds thereto. There are many guides on the web on how to do this well.
Do not assume bad intentions from others
Assertiveness is not about being tough or being soft, but about being yourself.
We were designed to express ourselves with confidence, not be like people think we are unless we use the softer side of language.
Our confidence is one of the most beautiful things about us that we cannot change, but how we speak ourselves can make a big difference in what happens next.
If you want to be more assertive, start off with a small action that you are 100% confident in. Then you can add more details as you go and grow in your assertiveness.
When you start off strong, others will be less nervous to tell you what they think and want to do something about it. They will trust your judgment more and growth takes place on that level.
Ask questions to gain information
When you want to ask a question, don’t hesitate to do so. You have the right to ask questions at any time, and if you don’t, then you should.
Ask questions when you don’t know something and you will be surprised how many people will help you out. They will give you the information that you want to know, because they trust that you will put enough thought into an answer to them.
When someone asks a question, make sure that you answer their question fully and with confidence. If there is something that needs to be clarification or added to, then do it! Do not stop talking until someone tells you that it was enough or that it was enough!
If necessary, use extra words or phrases to complete your answer or add an end garment thereto. This is used when the information that was given was not enough and needed more details been addressed.
