iPhone keyboards can be hard to type on for many people. Whether it is because of the size of the keyboard, the size of the letters, or just difficulty remembering the placement of keys, it is a common problem.
Some people may not like the idea of changing the appearance of the iPhone’s keyboard, but there are ways to make it bigger without changing its function. By learning how to make the iPhone keyboard bigger, you can help yourself or someone else that struggles with typing on it.
There are several apps in the App Store that claim to make the iPhone keyboard bigger, but not all of them actually do so in a permanent way. Some are only temporary fixes that only increase the size of the keyboard for a limited time period.
Find and open the General menu
The first step is to find and open the General menu in the Settings app. To do this, tap the Settings icon on your iPhone’s home screen, then select General. You can also open the Settings app via the Control Center and select General.
In the General menu, you can set your language and region, change your country’s dialling code, turn on voice dialing and more. However, we will be focusing on accessibility features in this article.
Under Accessibility, you will find Speech, Text Size, Keyboard Viewer and Dictation. These options can help make using your iPhone easier for people with disabilities such as arthritis or carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).
Arthritis causes swelling and pain in joints like fingers and knees. CTS is caused by inflammation in the ligaments that connect your fingers to the bones in your wrist. Both conditions can make it difficult to use a small device like an iPhone with one hand.
Find and open the Keyboard menu
The first step is to find and open the Keyboard menu. You will need to do this in order to access other keyboard settings like Shortcuts and Text Replacement.
To open the Keyboard menu, go to Settings > General > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard. Here you can choose your default keyboard or add a new one, such as Google Input.
You can also access the Keyboard menu in Settings by going to General > Accessibility > Keyboards. Here you can choose your default keyboard or add a new one, such as VoiceOver.
Both of these settings menus will also allow you to toggle silent notifications on and off for your keyboards.
Find the Keyboards page
To make the iPhone keyboard bigger, you will need to access the Keyboards page in the Settings section. This can be found in the General category.
Here, you can see all of the keyboards available on your phone. You can also add new keyboards from this page. New keyboards can be downloaded from the app store or created by yourself.
Some third-party keyboard apps require you to have a specific version of iOS so it is important to check that before downloading it. Some are very specific with the version number they require so keep an eye out for that.
Once you have checked that, just try them out and see which one you like! Some have different features that work for different people depending on what type of texting style you have.
Tap on Text Replacement
To make your iPhone keyboard bigger, you will need to access the Settings app. You can do this by going to Settings -> Keyboard -> Text Replacement.
Here, you can add new shortcuts to your keyboard. To make the keyboard bigger, add a shortcut for UIKeyboardSizeLarge . This will automatically replace the default small keyboard with a larger one when typed on.
Note: You must add the word large before UIKeyboardSizeAutomatic for this to work!
The Text Replacement section of the settings also has a place to save common short-cuts. To save time, add a shortcut for UIKit Size! Then, whenever you type that onto your keyboard, it will automatically enter the longer version of the short-cut.
Tap on + button
Now that you have added the new keyboard to your phone, you will need to set it as your default keyboard. You can do this by going into Settings and clicking General-Keyboards-Keyboard.
Here you will see all the keyboards you have installed and can select one as your default. The default keyboard is the one that will automatically pop up when you go to type something.
You can also change what size the keyboard is in General-Keyboards-Keyboard by selecting Scale Accessibility. Here you can choose what width or height you would like the keyboard to be and it will adjust the other dimension accordingly.
There are also different accessibility keyboards depending on what features you need. If you have trouble with typing, there is a feature that allows you to direct type which automatically selects what key you type for what word. Alternatively, there is a speech option that works like Siri where you speak your message instead of typing it out.
Enter a name for the text replacement
The first step is to enter a name for the text replacement. This is the method you will use to replace the small keyboard with a larger one.
Most people use an underscore character as the replacement, but you can use anything that you would type frequently. A short word or a letter will also work!
While it may seem silly to have a text replacement for something as simple as a letter, this is how smart phones were designed- to minimize screen space usage.
So, having the ability to make your keyboard bigger by replacing a single character is quite clever!
The best part is that you can do this for any app, not just the default iPhone keyboard. Any app that has input can have its own text replacement so that you can have a bigger input field.
Enter some text that will be replaced with your keyboard size code
To make your iPhone keyboard bigger, you will need to access the system settings. You can do this by going to Settings > General > Accessibility > Keyboard.
Here, you will find an option to enable an enlarged keyboard. When this is enabled, you will be given a code that you can enter in any other app to switch to the larger keyboard.
Once in the larger keyboard mode, you can tap and hold on any key and select Replace Key to enter the code that makes the keyboard bigger. Press Save and then Exit and Reenter Keyboard to save the changes.

Tap on the three dots in the bottom right corner of your keyboard
Next, tap on Keyboards. You will be redirected to the Keyboards page in the Settings app. Here, you can see all the different keyboard options you have installed on your phone.
You can also add more keyboards via the Settings app if you would like. There is a lot of freedom when it comes to keyboards on iPhones!
The default Keyboard is called Apple Keyboard and this is what you see when you open any app that requires typing. You can change this by going to Settings>General>Keyboard>Keyboard Type and selecting another one.
