How Many Characters Is A Tweet?

With the new Twitter character limit, many users are worried about how many characters is a tweet. While we have the ability to tweet up to 300 characters, it is not always clear if that includes media or not.

Typically, it does not include media like a photo or video. However, this can sometimes change depending on who updates the app.

With the new update, they have made it very clear that the tweet character limit is independent of media. You can read more about the new update and character limits here.

Knowing how many characters is a tweet is important because then you do not overshoot your character limit! Either you spend time editing your message to make it fit or you use another form of communication.

Is this tweet too long?

While some tweet length is acceptable, too long of a tweet can be a problem. If a user tries to write a long tweet, the app will automatically change the character count to that of two hundred and forty characters.

This makes it so that the user has to edit their tweet in order for it to be broadcasted. This can be frustrating for users who have a lot to say in a single tweet!

As mentioned before, the character limit is part of what makes Twitter, Twitter. It is part of the charm and appeal of the social media platform. While it may seem silly, fighting this feature would take away from what makes Twitter unique.

140 characters isn’t that many

Many people feel that 140 characters is too few to convey a meaningful message. However, this isn’t true.

With Twitter, you are limited to 140 characters per tweet. This includes the spaces between words and the @mentions and #hashtags you add.

So, if you add lots of hashtags or @mentions, you will use up more characters. Removing either of these will allow you to include more text in your tweet.

The problem is not the number of characters in a tweet, but how people use them. Many times people feel the need to add extra words or try to cram as much information into their tweets as possible. This is what makes them so short and uneventful!

Try to be more concise with your tweets and they will seem more interesting. Even if you have nothing special to say, taking your time to write out your tweet will make it seem more thoughtful.

Some characters count more than others

Although the Twitter limit is 280 characters, that doesn’t include the platform’s name or the symbol that precedes every tweet. That’s why there are only 140 characters left for your message.

Besides the platform name and symbol, tweets also include spaces between words and punctuation, known as white space. These count as characters, too.

So although it may seem like you have more room to tweet, in reality there are far fewer character spaces available to you. That’s why many of your favourite celebrities have their own rules when it comes to tweeting: they try to keep it under 140 characters.

If you find yourself running out of room, try compressing your message and removing any unnecessary words or punctuation.

Twitter allows links in tweets

Surprisingly, Twitter allows users to insert links in tweets. This is a great way to gain traffic to your website or blog as people can easily access it via their tweets.

However, with the limited space of a tweet, people can tamper with the link you insert which could lead people to a different page or nowhere at all.

This could be due to people leaving out letters when typing a link or changing the address completely. Since there is no check for this, it is up to you as a user to ensure your followers go to the correct page.

Another way people can use Twitter effectively is by tracking key words and hashtags. By doing this, you can reach out to more users who are interested in the same things as you! It is like having your own dedicated platform for your interests.

You can link to a photo or a video on Twitter

Since you can only add a fixed number of characters per tweet, you cannot add a picture or a video directly into your tweet. However, you can link to a picture or video on Twitter.

Many people use Twitter to post pictures and videos, so searching for a topic will likely give you many images and videos to choose from.

Twitter has a dedicated photo and video app where you can post directly from the app. You can also take photos and videos from the Twitter app and then upload them to your account.

Both methods allow you to add pictures and videos to your tweets, thus giving you more space to write!

You can also link to an external website where there are pictures or videos. By doing this, you are contributing to the spread of information on Twitter.

You can only put up to three links in a tweet

Since tweets are so short, you also can only put one image in a tweet. That’s it! No extra characters, no extra images, just the essential character count and links.

Since tweets are limited to 140 characters, adding more than one link would make the tweet even shorter, which would be confusing to your followers. They would not know which link to click on!

Adding more than one image would take up more space and again, be confusing. Your followers would not know which image to look at or where to go from the tweet.

This is why only one link and one image can be put in a tweet- it is for the best interest of your followers.

Don’t worry about the character limit until you get close to it

As you’re writing your tweet, don’t worry about how many characters it will take up. Focus on getting your point across and adding personality to your tweet.

If you find yourself running short, look for extra words you can cut and still get your point across. For example, you can change “I really want this” to “Want!” or “It’s so good” to “Good.”

It can be difficult to decide which word to cut in these cases, but just do your best and make sure everything is understandable. You can always shorten other tweets later!

The best thing about not worrying about the character limit until the end is that you won’t overthink your tweets. You will end up putting out more natural content that fits into the limit.

Break your message into separate tweets

If you have a long message to convey, try to break it up into several short messages, or tweets. This way, your message will be easier to understand and will be received well by your audience.

If you have a lot to say, people will not want to listen if it takes too long. Twitter users are very quick to delete messages they have already read, so you want to make sure your message gets received!

By separating your message into several tweets, you also create opportunity for re-tweets and engagement. If someone likes one of your tweets, they can then click the retweet button and send it to their own followers letting more people see your message.

If you have a really long message that needs to be conveyed, divide it up into several shorter messages that fit into Twitter’s character limit. Then tweet each one separately.
