After that, you must multiply the two to get the total volume of the solution. Then, divide that by the amount of aluminum needed in your object. This will give you the amount of solution needed to coat your object with enough coverage.

Purchase enough aluminum to cover the object

For best results, purchase enough aluminum to cover the object you want to plate in one session. This ensures that you will not run out of aluminum before finishing the object.

If you want to plate a larger object, then purchase more aluminum per hour of plating time to account for thicker layers. The more thickness added to the plated layer, the longer it will take to plate.

It is best to purchase aluminum in thin sheets with a thickness no greater than 0.02 in (0.508 mm) for easy handling and optimal results. Thicker pieces may require additional equipment such as rollers or special cutting tools to shape and mold it into the object desired.

Also note that different grades of aluminum vary in price and may be more cost-effective depending on what type of plating is desired.

Place the object into the bath and set the timer

Once the object is in the bath, it will start to absorb the aluminum into its surface. The rate at which this happens is called the pickup rate.

The pickup rate depends on a few factors. The first of these is the size of the object entering the bath. Larger objects take longer to saturate with aluminum due to their larger surface area and therefore more molecules of liquid aluminum. Smaller objects saturate more quickly.

It is always good to keep an eye on the level of solution in the tank, though- if it starts to get low, then you know you need to add more solution.

Remove it from the plating solution and rinse it off

Once your piece is plated, you must remove it from the solution. The best way to do this is by rinsing off the piece with water.

Many people use tap water, but we recommend using distilled water as it does not contain minerals that will stick to the plated object.

How you rinse your piece depends on the shape. If it is a flat piece or a wire, then all you have to do is brush off the excess solution and dry it off. If it is a shaped object, like a ring or pendant, then you must shape it while wet and dry it off afterwards.

It is important to note that if your piece has texture such as paint or engraving, then it needs to be dried before wearing or storing otherwise the texture will blur.

Plate more aluminum onto it until you are satisfied with how much there is

Once you are satisfied with the amount of aluminum on your object, you can stop the process. The more time that passes after the completion of the plating process, the thicker the layer will be due to oxidation.

Although it is possible to overplate an object, it is not recommended. Overplating can cause issues with the integrity of the piece due to inadequate melting of the new layer.
