Density and mass

When it comes to blocks, smaller density equals tighter fit. This is true when it comes to building with wood. You want the blocks to be as dense as possible so you can use them.
If the block were thinner, then it would be lighter in weight. This would not work if you wanted to construct a boat or some other water-based project. We recommend using medium density wood if you are going to build a boat. The thicker pieces of wood may be necessary for creating the bottom and sides of the boat. If you are building a floatation device such as a raft or tent, then we recommend the less dense wood because it may be more important in this case.
Example problem
A problem that happens to many wooden toys is that they break or lose their strength over time. This is a problem for these toys, as they are not made with the assumption that they will last for years upon years.
This can be a big downfall if you need to re-buy this toy due to age. You would have to buy new one every year or two because the wood wears off and creates less strength.
A way to prevent this is to make this toy out of dense wood such as cedar or pine. These materials hold their strength better then softwood materials like cotton and paper which may fall apart. To ensure your toy has enough strength, make sure it is laid on its side with the bottom facing up and then push down on it until it stands up.
How to find the density of an object

The strength of the wood comes from its weight- distribution. When water flows through a wooden structure, it forces some of the timber to swell and stick together. This process is called sapwood development or sap growth and occurs throughout a tree’s life.
Sap growth occurs due to changes in temperature and moisturecontent within a tree. When a tree reaches its maximum dryness or moisture content, it will develop some sapwood to protect itself from heat and stress during its life.
This process continues through the tree’s life, as older trees may have more development than younger ones. Development occurs at different rates across trees, however.
Can I make a denser block of wood?
Yes! There are many ways to make a denser wood block. Some methods are by using heavier timbers such as teak or solid wood instead of the thinner plywood used in most blocks.
We recommend using a solid wood block versus a thick plywood block due to the texture. A solid wood block has a slightly heavier feel than the thinner plywood block.
If you have the necessary skills, you can also use harder woods such as Teak or Western Cherry instead of softer woods such as pine or okay if you have very poor hand-tool skills because you can use simpler blocks like these.
What about other materials?
There are many materials that can be used to create blocks. Some examples are: concrete, sand, hay, and wood. Each has its own texture and appeal!
Choosing which material you would like your block to be depends on what kind of look you want to give off. For instance, a wood block that looks very grainy would probably benefit from a liquid glue instead of nail polish.
And if you wanted your block to look more lightweight and floatable, then a thinner wood or plastic material might be better suited. Either way, have a safe mission!
If the block is too heavy for your person to hold for an entire day, it is suggested that they use something else to sit on to prevent any pressure on the bones.
