The Roman Forum was the primary place for business in ancient Rome. This large plaza was the economic and political center of the city for many years.
As with any powerful city, Rome experienced its share of conflicts. Wars were fought, territories were conquered, and trade routes were established on the fertile ground of the Roman Forum.
Many of these developments in Roman history can be traced back to events that took place in the Forum. Political speeches were made here, legal decisions were decided here, and trade deals were struck here.
The word “forum” is thought to have come from an old Latin word meaning “a place where things are discussed or debated” (Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2019). This definition fits well with its role as a gathering place for debate and discussion.

Commercial transactions
The Roman Forum was the primary place for commercial transactions. There were shops and stands all over the area, and there was always someone trying to sell you something.
The Foruns was also a place where people would come to advertise their goods. So, even if you didn’t have any money, you could probably find something you wanted.
There were two main reasons people had for coming to the Roman Forum. The first was to buy things-and that could be anything from food or drink, to furniture or jewelry. The second reason was to hire someone or some kind of service.
There were lots of lawyers who had offices in the Forum, so if you had a legal issue you wanted addressed, this was probably the place to come. Likewise, if you wanted someone else killed, there were plenty of hitmen offering their services in the Forum.
Religious ceremonies
The Roman Forum was the primary place for religious ceremonies. This area was very important to the Romans, as most of their beliefs were tied to this place.
According to history, the land on which the Forum and many of the temples were built was once owned by Titus Tatius, the king of the ancient Sabines. When Rome defeated Sabina in a war around 750 BC, they claimed this land as theirs.
The gods that were worshipped in the temples here were very specific. For example, Jupiter was his own temple and was worshiped as the king of all gods. Many people came to him for help and protection, so it was important that this place was strong and sturdy.
I found it interesting that even though many people came to worship at different temples, there wasn’t much conflict between them. Professor Tilson explained that while each person came to worship at their own god or gods, they all believed that these deities were part of a larger group.
Judicial proceedings
The Roman Forum was the primary place for judicial proceedings. This was where lawsuits were filed, protests were made, and official announcements and proclamations were given.
Due to the importance of the area, there were many laws regulating who could enter the Forum and when they could enter. Only those with business could enter at certain times of the day or night, for example.
The area also had a Temple of Concord where peace treaties were signed and declared. There was also a Temple of Vesta where women worked to preserve peace in Rome by keeping the fire alive that symbolized it. Both of these places had special protections surrounding them.
The Fora that existed throughout Rome is what gave the city its name. These open areas served as central places for commerce and community gathering. They were very important in Roman culture, which emphasized the concept of communitas, or community.
Entertainment
The Roman Forum was the primary place for entertainment in ancient Rome. Not only was it a bustling marketplace, but it was also home to the Temple of Vesta, government buildings, and several taverns.
Many of these taverns had performances, either music or comedy. There were even theaters built on top of the temples that had performance spaces!
Romans liked to watch gladiators fight each other and beasts, listen to music and poetry, and laugh at comedy skits. Gladiators were fighters who would enter the ring ready to die for honor and glory. They trained very hard to be able to fight multiple people or one really tough beast.
The gladiators would often have their own fan clubs that would cheer them on during their fights.
Visiting historical sites
The Roman Forum was the primary place for visiting historical sites within Rome. The Forum is an area of the city that contains significant historical and cultural monuments.
Many of these monuments were built during the peak of the Roman Empire, around 1 AD. This makes the Roman Forum a very important historic site as it represents the height of Rome’s power and influence.
The most famous monument in the Forum is the Temple of Vesta. This temple was dedicated to the goddess Vesta and was where her sacred flame was kept. It was very important to preserve this flame, so much so that if there was no more fuel left, they would re-light it from a new source.
Another notable monument in the Forum is The Rostra. This platform held public speeches given by important figures like politicians and generals. Many people gathered to hear what they had to say.
Tourists visiting famous landmarks
Although many people refer to the Colosseum as “the Roman Coliseum,” the famous amphitheater was not built in ancient Rome. It was built more than a hundred years later, during the empire of Trajan.
The Colosseum is certainly iconic, but the true symbol of ancient Rome is a different building: the Pantheon.
This magnificent temple was erected nearly 2,000 years ago and still stands today. The Pantheon is so revered that it is now a church, dedicated to God (and all of his various manifestations).
Like many other tourists before you, you will undoubtedly take pictures in front of this famous building.
