The tides are one of the most notable features of the Earth. As the Earth rotates and orbits the Sun, various influences and occurrences cause differences in sea level.
These differences in sea level are known as tides. There are two main types of tides: semi-diurnal and diurnal. Semi-diurnal tides occur twice a day, once when the Moon is approaching the Earth and once when it is retreating. Diurnal tides only occur once a day, when the Moon is directly opposite the Sun.
Tides vary in height due to several factors, one of which being the lunar phase. The lunar phase refers to how much of the Moon is illuminated: new moon (no illumination), first quarter (half illumination), full moon (full illumination), last quarter (no illumination again).

Lunar phases and tides
As we’ve discussed, tides are caused by the gravitational forces of the moon and sun interacting with the oceans and seas. These planetary bodies all exert influence on one another, creating patterns in the sky and on Earth.
There are two main tidal patterns: high tide and low tide. These tides occur every day, as the moon and sun rotate once on their own cycles. The timing of these tides changes depending on the lunar cycle — i.e., how many days it takes for the full moon to return.
The lunar cycle varies in length based on how many days it takes for the new moon to return. This is why there is a new moon every one or two weeks, but the full moon returns once a month.
Tides can be more or less pronounced depending on what stage of the lunar cycle we are in.
Which lunar phases have the least pronounced tides?
When the moon is in its first and last quarters, tides are lower than at new and full moons. This is because the gravitational pull of the moon is equally offset by the sun at these phases.
As the moon orbits the earth, it moves in relation to the earths gravitational field. The strength of this field depends on where the moon is in its orbit-the closer to being directly opposite the earth, the stronger its gravitational field.
At new and full moons, when the lunar orbit positions it closest to being opposite earth, there is a higher surge of water due to this stronger gravitational pull. At first and last quarters, when it positions it self halfway between new and full, there is a weaker surge of water due to the equal offset with the sun.
These tips can come in handy if you are experiencing high tides and want to stay out of water for a few hours! Or maybe you just want to watch some low tide activity.
Tide charts can help you navigate the sea
Beyond simply knowing the lunar phase of the tide, knowing how the tides change over time is also useful knowledge.
Tide charts are a pretty cool thing that you can find online or at most beaches and waterfronts. They list the times of high and low tide for each day, along with other notes like sunrise and sunset times, weather forecasts, and water conditions (like if there will be strong current or not).
These charts are very useful for coastal activities like fishing, surfing, kayaking, and swimming. Because these activities happen at different times depending on the tide level, having a good sense of when they are lowest can save you time and trouble.
(Note:) Although it may seem counterintuitive, the lower highs (i.e., lower than previous highs) occur at certain lunar phases.
Know your location and local conditions
In order to know exactly when the highest and lowest tides will be, you need to know where you are. The size of the tide changes depending on location and what influences that location has on tides.
For example, if you are in a region where monsoon season occurs, you will have larger tides due to increased rainfall which causes higher water levels. If you are near a large body of water like an ocean or lake, your tides will be stronger due to the influence of the water outside your body of land.
Knowing these conditions beforehand can help you determine exactly when the highest and lowest tides will be. Check with local authorities to learn more about these conditions and how they affect high tide levels.

The shape of the moon affects the ocean’s tide levels because it influences the amount of direct sunlight that hits the ocean. When the moon is full, it reflects a lot of sunlight, so tides may be lower due to less water density and less gravitational pull.
This tip is for novice sailors who may not know how to identify phases of the moon or how to use them to predict tides.

When planning a trip, it’s always a good idea to ask someone who has been to the destination before for advice. In this case, that’s the NOAA’s Ocean service department and their experts.
They have created a chart that indicates at which lunar phase(s) tides are least pronounced (i.e., the lowest high tides) and how much difference in height there is between high and low tides.
This chart is very useful if you plan to go surfing or fishing on the tide changes.
Tides are caused by the moon and sun interacting with the Earth and water
The gravitational forces of the moon and sun pull on the Earth and water, causing tides. The moon’s gravitational force is stronger than the sun’s, so it has a larger effect on tides.
Because the moon orbits around the Earth in about a month, it changes position relative to the sun as it does so. This changing position of the moon relative to the sun causes its gravitational force to either strengthen or weaken on the Earth and water.
When this weakening or strengthening occurs at new moon or full moon, tides are least pronounced (i.e., have lower high tides and lower lows). When it occurs at first or third quarter phase, tides are most pronounced (i.e., have higher high tides and higher lows).
This is because at these lunar phases, the moon is either facing directly away from or directly toward the Earth, thus having greater pulling strength.
How to calculate a tide chart
Aside from knowing the lunar phases, you need to know the moon’s position in relation to the sun to determine tides. The sun and moon are spheres, and we measure their positions in relation to each other in terms of alignment (conjunction) or opposite (opposition) — these are the new and full moons.
The difference between new and full moons is that at full moon, the sun, earth, and moon are aligned. This means that the gravitational pull of the moon is acting in direct opposition to that of the sun — pulling in the same direction.
At new moon, there is no sunlight reaching either body, so their gravitational pulls are not opposed. This means that tides will be lower at these lunar phases.
