Doing time lapse photography is pretty simple, but it does take some planning! The first step in doing time lapses is deciding what type of time lapse you want to do. There are three main types: panning, moving across the frame, and still life.
There are also different ways to achieve each one depending on your camera. For example, with panoramic photos, you have to use special software or apps to create them. With moving-pattern lupus, there must be at least two things in the picture that are moving for it to be considered a time lapse. And, for still lifes, you just have to find interesting objects to photograph!
This article will talk about how to do all three of these time lapse types using your own equipment! So, stay tuned and read on for more information.
Take long exposures for time lapse photography

Doing time-lapse photography is a fun way to create some interesting pictures. Time lapses are typically done in one of two ways: either by having the subject stay still while you move the camera slowly, or moving the object frame by frame.
The first type of time lapse we looked at was panoramic photos. By taking many quick shots along an extended line, you can make it seem like there’s more space than there actually is!
That’s why it’s called panoramic photography – because you get the feeling that you’re looking across a wide open area.
Time lapse photographs using this technique usually consist of people walking around or cars driving somewhere. What makes these special is that the walker/driver is very steady, so the trick is to use a slow shutter speed to capture the motion.
A low f-stop (the wider aperture setting) helps achieve this as well. Because light does not have to pass through all the parts of the lens, your photo comes down to how fast it takes to reach the sensor. A longer exposure length also contributes to the effect.
Another classic time lapse picture style is sunrises and sunsets. These are popular because they happen pretty frequently, and you can take lots of cool pictures before it sets or before it rises again.
Sun rise and sunset timelapses require careful preparation.
Use a tripod

For time lapse photography, you will need a sturdy camera body with enough memory to hold all of your photos.
A good way to do this is by investing in an entry level DSLR like the Canon EOS 750D or similar model. These cameras have adequate storage space to start out with and can be found for around $500-600.
You will also want to invest in at least two neutral density (ND) filters. An ND filter cuts down how much light gets into the lens so that you can take longer exposure times without overexposing the photo.
These are usually sold as circular pieces that go over the front element of the lens. You can find them anywhere from online stores to brick and mortar locations.
Practice making long exposures

Doing time lapse photography really comes down to having a camera that can make very long exposure times. Most cameras have a shutter speed limit of 1 minute, which is why most time-lapse videos are limited to minutes or hours at best.
Some newer models have faster shutters, but even those are usually only capable of up to 30 seconds per photo! If you have access to one of these new generation cameras, then start experimenting with time lapses!
There are many ways to do time lapse photography beyond just using a fast shutter speed. You could use slow motion video (slow moving film) to capture still photos every few seconds, use neutral density filters to create longer exposure times, or simply hold your camera steady!
This article will go into more detail about some easy ways to begin doing time lapse photography.
Use the right equipment

A lot of people start doing time lapses by using their smartphone or some other device with special apps. While these are helpful, they do not give you the full effect of time lapse photography.
There is an expensive piece of camera gear that can be used for time lapse photography – a tripod!
A good time lapse photographer uses a sturdy tripod so that they do not have to worry about whether or not the shutter will close while shooting. This allows them to use longer exposure times which results in more interesting pictures.
Tripods cost around $30-50 depending on model, but are totally worth it. They make your time lapse photo much higher quality!
Another important part of time lapse photography is having a light source. Most time lapse photographers have a lighting kit consisting of lights such as lamps, flash units, or both. Having adequate light is very crucial to taking beautiful time lapse photos.
Weekly tip: Try experimenting with different types of ambient (no additional light) light sources to create some unique pictures.
Create a time lapse video

Doing time lapses is not difficult, but it does take some preparation. Before you start shooting your time lapse video, you will need at least two good quality cameras with fully functional autofocus systems.
You will also want an editor that has recording software such as Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro so that you can edit your videos later.
There are several free editing softwares available as well which work just fine! Some of these include Microsoft Windows’s own Movie Maker or Google’s quick-launch app called YouTube Video Editor. Check them out!
When doing time lapses, remember that each exposure may last one minute or even longer depending on the length of the sequence. This means that your camera needs to be able to hold up for long periods without burning in.
Share your time lapse photos

Doing time lapses is an art that requires you to invest in good equipment, rich software, and creative skills. But one of the easiest ways to start doing time lapses is by sharing your work!
There are many social media sites with the potential to get lots of eyes on your work. You can pick and choose which ones to feature yourself on depending on what types of engagement you want to see.
Some examples include Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. All three of these have large audiences so it is easy for new artists to gain exposure.
If you’re looking to take your time lapse photography to the next level, try showcasing your work on those websites. Word-of-mouth advertising is one of the best strategies to grow your audience.
Get inspiration from great time lapse photographers

Let’s take a look at some examples of beautiful time lapses!
I have included some links below to websites, blogs, and YouTube videos that contain more detailed information about how to do time-lapse photography. You can also find lots of rich tapestry content and inspiration by looking through our Instagram account.
As you begin your journey as a time lapse photographer, there are several things you need to understand. One is that most professional time lapse artists will use a tripod as a base for their camera. This helps keep the camera still while capturing very smooth moving images.
Another important part of creating time lapses is knowing when to stop recording! Sometimes people get so immersed in the process of taking photos and editing them down that they forget to save enough space on their computer or run out of battery before finishing.
So what are we talking about here? We’re talking about creating pictures that really stand out and evoke emotion. It’s not just an average picture with an average feeling; these are stories that tell a story.
Try new locations and times of day

Time lapse photography is an incredible way to capture beautiful still pictures that show off your beauty or life in nature. It’s also a great way to add some depth to your photographs by adding time, creating moving images!
Time lapses can be done at home using natural light and advanced lighting techniques like HDR (High Dynamic Range) brighlening.
