All cars have something called an engine, which is what powers the vehicle. The engine in your car can be tricky to work with!
There are many things that can go wrong with it, and if you do not know how to fix it or take good care of it, then nothing will get better.
Some of the most common problems related to engines occur because people do not know how to properly clean them. When we refer to cleaning, we mean both washing and oiling.
Washing means using a quality hose and solvent to remove dirt from the surface of the engine. This includes removing dried up motor oil as well! Having proper functioning wipers is also important since some water may get trapped under the hood.
Oiling makes sure all of the moving parts are working by coating them with fresh lubricant. Make sure to never use any kind of oil other than for the engine specified for its type.
This article will talk about some easy ways to maintain your car’s engine! Keep reading for more tips.
Check and change the oil
Changing your car’s engine oil is one of the most important maintenance tasks you will do for your vehicle. While some brands recommend changing the oil every 3,000-5,000 miles, we can fix that for you!
We have partnered with AutoCare Foundation to give away free comprehensive engine service this month! You don’t need to be a service plan member to win. Simply visit www.autocarefoundation.org/car and enter to automatically receive $25 worth of service at no cost!
To help you get ready for your appointment, we’ve compiled information about what types of oils are needed for different vehicles, how to tell if your current oil is the right thickness, and how to test the quality of your engine oil.
Also, remember these tips before starting your engine: Make sure all areas are clean, check the dipstick for proper placement, and make sure there are no cracks in the oil pan or kinks in the hosepipe.
Check and test your coolant
One of the first things to check when cleaning your car is your engine’s cooling system. Make sure that your hose goes down by the radiator, out the drain hole, and back up into the reservoir!
If it does not go all the way back into the reservoir, then you may need to replace the hose or refill the water tank depending on how much liquid there is in the hose.
Never pour baking soda or antifreeze directly onto an engine as this can cause serious damage or poisoning.
Instead, use a spray bottle or syringe to add some cleaner to the powder and agitate it in a container. Add this mixture through either the intake or exhaust pipe so it doesn’t dry out.
Do a routine inspection
After you have cleaned your car’s engine, it is important to do an initial inspection to see if there are any warning signs that something might be wrong.
You should check all of the following areas thoroughly:
• The oil pan and lid
• The dipstick for both the internal and external engines
• If an additive such as detergent or acid has been mixed with the motor fuel
• Whether there is enough fluid in the reservoir tank
If you notice anything strange, don’t drive away until you figure out what it is!
It could mean trouble for your vehicle and/or injury to yourself or someone else. It is better to stop and fix things than to let bad stuff happen.
Run a gas and engine flush
Running an engine flush is one of the best ways to clean your car’s engine. This can be done at any time, but professional engines are flushed every two years to prevent dirt, grime, and contaminants from building up over time.
You do not need special tools to complete an engine flush. You will need a funnel that fits in the drain plug (this is already installed into most cars), glass dipsticks, rubbing alcohol, a plastic container to hold all liquid used during the process, and a brush or rag to wipe down the engine after it has been drained.
There are several brands of engine flushes available online and at auto parts stores.
Do a battery test

An easy way to determine if your car’s engine has enough power is by doing a quick battery check. Take a close look at the charging indicator on the positive terminal of the battery. If it does not show any change, then the battery may be deficient in electricity.
A fully charged battery will quickly light up when connected to a computer or other device that have external speakers. You can also connect the speaker to the negative battery wire to listen for sounds.
If you notice a low rattle, this could indicate poor battery performance. Make sure to get it fixed as soon as possible! Luckily, there are some things you can do to fix this yourself. More information about how to perform a basic automotive maintenance check out our article here.
Replace the battery
After you have cleaned your car’s engine, make sure to replace the battery! This will take away any reason why your vehicle would not start properly.
Usually, when cleaning an old engine, people forget about replacing the battery. Luckily, there are easy ways to find it. You can use http://www.carpartswarehouse.com/ as a resource for this.
However, if you do happen to remove the battery, be careful where you put it! Make sure to keep an eye out for leaks so that you don’t waste expensive liquid.
Once replaced, double check to see that it is working by trying to turn the key in the ignition or testing the charge by putting a white piece of tape across the terminals.
Test your headlights and taillights
When washing or cleaning your vehicle, make sure you do not touch any electrical components with wet hands or dirty materials. If you need to wash the car yourself, use appropriate tools and ensure everything is cleaned properly!
If you are ever unable to turn on your lights, check to see if there are any cracks in the glass or dirt under the bulbs. This could mean that something is wrong with the bulb itself or the circuit board it is connected to.
Likewise, if your engine makes loud noises when you start the car, check to see if anything looks loose or rusty. this could be due to a failing component such as a valve spring, piston, or cylinder.
We recommend having your vehicle inspected by a professional at least once per year to ensure everything works correctly.
Check your tire pressure
While it may sound tedious, checking your car’s tyre pressure is an important part of vehicle maintenance. This can be done by looking at both the front and back wheels of your car.
The correct tyre pressure will help you get the most out of your car while also protecting its inner components from damage. If your tyres are underinflated then your car won’t hold as much air which could cause excessive wear and tear on the engine.
On the other hand, if they’re overinflated then your car will not perform well due to too much drag. Both of these things could potentially hurt your fuel efficiency and even result in accidents or collisions.
So what should you do when you notice that one of your cars tires is low or flat? You should pull over immediately and change the tyre before it gets worse!
But how does one tell whether a wheel is under- or overinflated? There are several easy ways to check this. Many people already have tools and equipment for this so there is no need to go into detail about them here.
However, we will discuss some basic ones below such as a gauge that helps determine tyre pressure.
