In the early 1700s, Russia was still in the process of establishing itself as a powerful nation. While the Tsars had consolidated power over the country and established Moscow as the capital city, there was still a sense of isolation from other nations.
Russia was bordered by many other countries, but most of them were either small buffer states or seas. There was no obvious place to establish trade and commerce, nor was there a clear path for immigration.
This isolationist attitude spread to culture as well. The Tsars wanted to have a strong, national identity that could compete with other nations, but did not have much exposure to other cultures outside of Russia.
However, this changed in 1710 when Peter the Great traveled across Europe to learn more about shipbuilding and navigation. When he returned, he established a new city on the Gulf of Finland called Saint Petersburg to be Russia’s “window on the West”.
Location on the Neva River
One of the reasons St. Petersburg is so important to Russian history is because of its location. The city was built on the Neva River, which comes from Lake Ladoga.
This lake is very important in Russian history as a way to supply water and shipping routes. There are also many islands on the lake, one of which was where the Tsar built his summer palace.
Lake Ladoga is also where one of the major battles against Swedish forces took place, so it has some historical significance as well. The water transportation helped St. Petersburg grow into a major city, linking it to other ports and countries.
The fact that it was built on the Neva River also makes it unique compared to other Russian cities that are located closer to the Ural Mountains or Siberian taiga (forest).
Peter the Great’s vision
Peter the Great was tsar of Russia from 1682 until his death in 1725. During that time, he spent a lot of time and effort trying to westernize his country, as well as expand its territory.
He visited the west several times, hiring many foreign workers to help him modernize his country. He also traveled around Europe inspecting their armies, navies, and factories to see how they could be applied in Russia.
His vision was to have a prosperous and powerful nation that could compete with the west. He wanted Russia to have a navy and merchant fleet as strong as those of England or Denmark, and for his country to be economically independent.
He also wanted Russia to have strong industries and a strong army comparable with those of the other great powers of Europe.
Russia’s window on the west
In the early 1700s, Russia was a closed country, with few connections to the outside world. The country’s tsars (or kings) had little interest in western Europe, its culture, and its technology.
By that time, western Europe was well ahead of Russia in several important areas including trade and manufacturing. Many Russians lived in poverty as a result of low-tech farming and limited international trade.
This situation began to change when Peter the Great became tsar in 1682. He was determined to bring Russia out of its isolation and into the modern world by adopting western European ideas and technology.
He traveled extensively through western Europe to learn about new industries and visit other monarchs. When he returned to Russia, he set up factories to manufacture textiles and other goods using modern techniques.
Famous landmarks
In addition to having a rich history, St. Petersburg is also home to several famous landmarks. Some of these include the Hermitage Museum, the Winter Palace, and the Peter and Paul Fortress.
The Hermitage Museum is one of the greatest art museums in the world. It was built by Emperor Paul I in 1764 and later enlarged by his son, Emperor Alexander I.
The museum houses over 1 million works of art including paintings, sculptures, drawings, and archeological finds. Many of these pieces were donated to the museum by Russian royalty and wealthy citizens.
The Winter Palace was actually where the Tsar (Russian emperor) lived. In 1917 during the Russian Revolution, revolutionaries stormed the palace and killed both members of the royal family as well as their servants before setting it on fire. Only a few paintings were saved from the burning palace.
World-renowned opera house
Saint Petersburg’s most famous landmark is the spectacular building that houses its world-renowned opera house. The Grand Opera House was built in 1833 and restored in 1985.
The building was originally constructed to be the palace of the Governor-General of New Russia, but it was reconstructed to be Saint Petersburg’s opera house following the democratic reforms of 1905.
In 1918, the opera house became national property and was renamed the Azerbaijan Opera and Ballet Theater. It remained as such until 1930 when it was once again named after Emperor Alexander II and became a part of the Academy of Arts.
In 1942, during World War II, it was completely destroyed by German bombs, but it was rebuilt in time for its 100th anniversary in 2003. Today it is still used for operas and ballets, attracting tourists from all over to see some of Russia’s finest talent on stage.
Has a sunny climate most of the year
Russia’s second-largest city, Novosibirsk, is located in southwestern Siberia. It was founded in 1903 and has a population of almost 2 million people.
What’s interesting about Novosibirsk is that it has a nearly Mediterranean climate. In fact, the average temperature of the coldest month is nearly as warm as that of southern Spain!
It also gets plenty of precipitation, mostly in the form of snow. Thanks to these characteristics, this city is known as “the gateway to Siberia” and a “suburban paradise.”
However, if you are not a winter sports enthusiast then maybe don’t move here during wintertime! Luckily there are plenty of places to go for winter vacations these days so you won’t miss out on that.
Famous for its decadent aristocracy
Russia is also famous for its aristocracy, the upper class that ruled the country for many years. The Russian aristocracy was known as the Tsarist regime, named after the family that ruled for over 300 years.
This aristocracy was particularly decadent, with lavish parties and social events featuring fine food and expensive drinks. This was largely due to their wealth, as they did not need to work for a living.
Some of their most famous gathering spots were Paris and San Sebastian, Spain. Many Russians went to these cities to indulge in the rich culture and night life there.
The Russians that stayed in these cities even started local groups called “Russian circles” where they would get together and party. These circles were very popular among the aristocrats visiting from Russia.
Home to many rich businessmen and women today
In today’s world, St. Petersburg is a bustling city that is home to many rich businessmen and women. The city is thriving, with many new buildings being constructed and old ones being renovated.
Many of the old buildings that were constructed by the tsars are now museums where you can tour them and learn about their history. The beautiful architecture is something all visitors should take the time to admire.
St. Petersburg is a city that has many different influences on its culture due to its rich history. There are festivals throughout the year that celebrate these differences, making it a very festive place to be.
Whether you are visiting for business or for pleasure, there is always something happening in Saint Petersburg that will capture your attention.
