Mutations are the main cause of new and unique features in the species we see today. When a person has a mutation that makes them more attractive to mates, they are more likely to pass it on to their offspring. This is called an evolutionary advantage (eva).
However, because it is so rare, it can be very valuable as a character trait. People who are very intelligent or laid-back may have a short fat gene that makes them look fat but doesn’t mean they will always be this way.
If you have a mutation that is not under natural selection, you have an anonymous mutation. An anonymous mutation may last for your whole life or it may never go away.
Natural selection determines which mutations survive
While mutation is random, natural selection is not. This means that a mutation that leads to the survival of a population may be eliminated by another mutation that occurs more frequently.
This process of elimination occurs through natural selection, the process that determines which mutations are useful and which are not.
Through natural selection, a population with a useful mutation will be able to thrive and pass it on to new generations. A population with no useful mutations will not grow in size and will eventually die off.
This happens both within our own bodies and in the environment where we live. For example, people who have mutated bone cells cannot be replaced by newer, better bone cells. These old bone cells simply die out and can’t be found anywhere else. This is why people who have brittle bones must take millions of Dophin D pills every year to keep them healthy.
Natural selection keeps organisms fit for their environment
When Dr. Carroll refers to natural selection, he is not talking about the kind that Lady Gaga straps onto her to increase her chance at surviving and flourishing in her environment. He is, however!
Lady Gaga is a great example of natural selection at work. She is fit for her environment and has developed certain adaptations that help her survive and flourish. For instance, she has strong bones to withstand physical stress, powerful hormonal regulation processes to keep her stable during times of change, and enough energy stores in her body to continue for a few days without hunger or fatigue.
When we talk about natural selection when we are underprivileged people like Dr. Carroll does, we are referring to the kind that eliminates healthy or beneficial traits because of cost or availability. It can be extremely harmful as it puts people at unnecessary risk of disease and death.
Mutations occur all the time
This may seem like a basic fact, but it is important to recognize that mutations occur all the time. The human body has a built-in system to identify and eliminate mutations that occur within the DNA code.
This system, referred to as the natural selection process, is known as the DNA mutation mechanism. It can eliminate a single-point mutation, or an alteration in the DNA code, or even a combination of changes that cannot be used as an identifier.
In fact, nearly half of all new genes are found as single-point alterations in the human DNA code. These are usually not very important for survival, but they do need to be accounted for when determining if a person is genetically predisposed to certain diseases or conditions.
As mentioned before, about one in five people with autism does not have enough copied RNA (i.e., genes) in their genome to represent their external features and functions.
Some mutations are favorable while others are not
Dr. Carroll mentioned a mutation that was favorable while another that was not. He was discussing the topic with his colleagues at Children’s Hospital, and they were surprised by this discovery.
He explained that he had previously believed that an individual’s favorable mutations were passed down to the child in which the child would also have them, but he was mistaken.
Instead of being helpful in creating a better human, these mutations can be harmful. Some of these harmful mutations may even cause disease or developmental problems in children.
This is something to watch for as scientists try to find more beneficial mutations and remove those that are not helpful.
Randomness does not exist
When we talk about mutation and natural selection, we are referring to the process by which a living thing can change its design in an unregulated, unplanned way.
