Barium sulfide is an inert, blue mineral. It can be found in many places around the world, but its most common location is as a constituent in waterfalls.
When a waterfall receives enough pressure and frequency of treatment, it can use the blue barium sulfide as a system restorer. The sulfide acts as a duressure, pulling water into its cells, which increases the overall health of the waterfall.
Because it can be found in so many places, it is easy to introduce it into your system. Just like any new substance or system, there are required reactions and standards for reactions.
Barium sulfide is a weak base
Barium sulfide is a weak base, which makes it change into an acid when mixed with an aqueous solution. This makes it dangerous!
When mixed with water, barium sulfide dissolves and breaks down into two compounds: barium ion and sulfite. Sulfite is an acidic compound, which causes the dissolution of other substances in your body.
As you can guess, this problem can occur when your water contains unhealthy amounts of bacteria or when you do not drink enough water daily. Either way, you should treat yourself to a bathtub or a shower to get rid of the irritation.
However, there is something you can do to prevent this reaction from happening again.
The reaction produces barium sulfate and water
When one of these solutions is mixed with water, aqueous solutions of barium sulfide form a gaseous state called sulfuric acid.
This reaction can occur in several ways, but the most common way is when an emitter device such as a smoke alarm or carbon monoxide alarm comes into contact with the solution.
When this happens, the solution may splash onto the surface of the device and create an alarming odor. This occurs more frequently when there are children living in the home because they may create an embarrassing reaction to sulfuric acid.
To avoid this, all devices should be exposed to a safe source of acid before being mixed with water to form a solution.
Reactions involving sulfuric acid are very dangerous
When one combines aqueous solutions of barium sulfide and sulfuric acid, an unstable reaction occurs. The solution becomes corrosive and throws out gas. This reaction is called the purple explosion.
The gas that results is black and frothy. The sulfury acid in the solution burns in your mouth, so be careful where you mix it!
This reaction can occur when bagged sulphuric acid is not available or is expensively priced. A quick fix are to use water instead of plain water, since water contains H2O. This makes the solution more liquid!

Learn the properties of your chemicals
When you combine two or more chemicals into a solution, you must use special treatment to ensure that the two substances get mixed and combined into one.
This is called combined treatment or CWT. It means that you must use the same solvent for both chemicals, or CW for them. When you do this, your options for changing the chemical composition are limited, as only one possible reaction happens when two different chemicals are in a solution: adsorption.
A few interesting reactions occur when Adsorption occurs. It can happen to solidifications such as ice cream or syrup where someone sticks a vacuum pump on top of it to pull out some air. However, most Adsorption products do not have any noticeable smell or sight of the Adsorbing agent in them.
Make sure all chemicals are properly labeled
When working with certain acids and solvents, it is important to properly label and describe them. These include but are not limited to: Acidic liquids such as laughing gas, Vinegar, Soda Water, and some soft drinks are labeled this way.
When mixing solutions of barium sulfide and sulfuric acid, be aware of the potential for reaction. If this reaction occurs excessively or occurs in a quick manner, you may be able to reduce the volume of the solution by half or even one-fourth.
To prevent excessive reaction or reacting with other substances, be sure to use pure acid and write down the name of the liquid for the sake of response.
Use the right container for your chemical(s)
When you mix aqueous solutions of barium sulfide and sulfuric acid, you must use a correct container for the chemical. The container should be filled with the correct amount of solution.
If you use a glass jar, it may break while mixing the two chemicals. If you use a bottle, it may pop when combining the two chemicals. These problems can be avoided if the solution is filled to the top of the container.
Know how to handle your chemical(s)
When working with aqueous solutions, it is important to know the reactions that occur. These can be positive or negative!
Some solutions cannot be treated with chemicals. For example, if you were to mix sodium carbonate and sulfuric acid, you would have a very unpleasant outcome and possibly serious consequences if this combination did not happen within an extremely short time frame.
It takes some time for the solution to set up, for the chemical to act and/or diffuse into the liquid mixture, and for it to effect whatever reaction you are looking for. This takes some time!
When working with chemicals that have an Aqueous Solution Appearance (AQAA) of white or gray, it is always best to use a glass or plastic container so that any splash does not affect the contents.
Know how to prevent a reaction involving sulfuric acid
When preparing aqueire solutions of sulfide and acid, it is important to establish proper protection against reaction. These solutions should be refrigerated or frozen before use.
The solution must be stirred constantly to prevent the mixture to solidify. If it does solidify, then let it sit until the solution comes up hot again.
To protect against gaseous reaction, plastic wrap or a similar material should be used. These must be discarded when the reaction is completed or after protecting against air and liquid escape are eliminated.
