After leaving Fortnite as it is today, there was an era when people were asking what would be the next big thing in gaming. Some say this happened with Call of Duty or The Division 2, but truthfully, it’s not really clear which one sparked the inspiration to make their own take on the concept.
What we can agree upon though is that they are both very popular games!
A battle royale game gives players a large map full of bullets, limited time for survival, and no way out other than by finding a good spot and staying there until you get rescued.
These games have people talking because they are so addicting and thrilling. Even if you don’t like video games at all, these ones are easy to pick up and play, making them great casual games.
The popularity of battle royales has exploded over the past couple years. There are currently several different brands of BR games, some more successful than others. This article will talk about two of the most well-known types of battle royale games – Player vs Environment (PvE) battle royals and Team Builder (TB) battle royals.
This article will discuss why team builder battle royals are such a success and how YouTubers use them to create fun experiences for their followers.
Battle Royale
A battle royale game is a new genre of video games that condenses down the overall plot to “Survive as long as you can!”
The term was first coined in an article published by The Guardian back in March 2018. According to writer Charlie O’Malley, the inspiration for this type of game comes from nature.
He described it as such: “It’s like watching a tree grow or a jungle evolve.”
Since then, there have been many different types of battle royal games with varying levels of complexity. Some are free-to-play while others require you to purchase microtransactions to progress.
There have also been rumors about potential collaborations between some brands and battle royal genres. For example, people believe Call Of Duty might be adding their own version of survival mode at some point.
BR Royale
As we mentioned before, battle royale games have become quite popular in recent years. With companies such as Fortnite having over 100 million daily active users, it’s clear that people are enjoying them!
However, not everyone enjoys the genre for what it is — just another way to show off how good you are at shooting things – or wants to play against other human beings.
Some prefer games like this because they feel there’t enough emphasis placed on teamwork and communication. You can easily pick up these types of games where players don’t need to talk much since everything is automated.
Another criticism some may have is that while yes, the game does give you an advantage by giving you better equipment than your opponents, it also gives them more money, which allows them to buy even better equipment later on. This, some argue, devalues the experience for others who played with less powerful gear.
With all of this being said, something new has cropped up online. A type of battle royal gameplay that doesn’t feature any form of team-based competition nor anyone else’s input.
Created back in May 2017, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (or PUBG for short) quickly became one of the most downloaded mobile apps ever. Since then, it has exploded into a fully fledged video game franchise with its own dedicated community, merchandise, and championship events.
Death Royale
While not quite a battle royale game, there was one early prototype of death match games that shared some similarities with the genre. This gameplay format comes straight from the tabletop game concept of “deathmatch”. In this style of play, two teams compete against each other in an area designed for up to twenty players.
There are usually goalies or neutral players who work together to prevent either team from scoring by using their skills and equipment to defend the opposing side. Once a team is able to score a goal by knocking out all of the defenders, then those members of the team can be given awards like ‘Goalie of The Round’, etc.
This type of game really became popular in online multiplayer modes where both teamwork and individual skill are needed to succeed. A famous example of this is Team Fortress 2, a video game which has spawned many similar concepts including the one we discuss here today!
So what were these early deathmatch games? Well, they were typically played as either Capture-The-Flag (CTF) or Bombing Run. For CTF, one team must capture the other team’s flag and return it to their own base before the timer runs down. For bombing run, one team needs to find and destroy the other team’s bomb while protecting their own. If the attacker fails to protect the bomb, then they lose.
Sky Arena
Before Playerunknown’s Bounty, there was another battle royale game that got pretty popular. Called Sky Arena, it released in May of 2018 and is still available to play today. While not as well known as either The Lab or PlayerUnknown’s Bountys recent hit, this one boasts its own fan community and prestige.
Sky Arena features only two modes- survival and team deathmatch. There are no individual goals like in other battle royales, instead you work together towards a common goal- staying alive as long as possible!
The way teams win is by working together to protect each other while also looking out for any stranded players who could potentially help you survive longer. You can invite your friends to join you, or use online tools to find teammates.
Playing Sky Arena is totally free, but microtransactions are optional. These let you purchase some items such as camouflage clothing or glimmer powder to give yourself more health or speed boosts.
Last Arena
A few years ago, there was an emerging genre of games that were creating a lot of buzz. These games are known as battle royale games. They feature large maps with limited resources and no end to how long you can survive.
Vale Royale
Before Player vs. Player (PvP) battle royales, there was something called Vale Royale. This type of game is similar to what we have today with battle royal games, but instead of having teams or players trying to survive against other teams or individuals, it’s just you and everyone else!
In Vale Royale, every player chooses an area of the map as their own turf. They can then use that territory for anything from farming, to collecting resources, to hosting a house party if they are lucky enough to find one.
As people invade your property, they must work together to figure out how to take down all of the defensive measures you’ve put in place. It’s very mob-style gameplay.
