When Will Google Analytics Be Unable To Identify Sessions From The Same User By Default?

Google Analytics is a free web analytics tool offered by Google. It is widely used due to its ease of use and wide range of features. Google Analytics allows you to track user interactions with your site, such as page views, content interactions, and navigation.

In early 2019, Google announced that GA would no longer identify sessions from the same user by default. This means that unless you take action, you will no longer be able to tell whether or not a user has logged in to your site using the same account or different accounts.

This update will be rolling out over the next few weeks so it may not be active on your account yet. Check on the Updates section of your settings to see when this update will be activated on your account.

Google is moving to a browser-based approach

As of May 10, 2018, Google announced that it would be moving to a browser-based approach to tracking user sessions. This means that users will have to be logged into their Google account when they access Google services, such as Gmail or Google Search, for the connection to be recorded as a session on GA.

Previously, GA had allowed website owners to set a cookie in the user’s browser that would identify them as having already visited the site. This allowed users to navigate away from the site and return without having to log in again.

The new system will no longer allow this by default. Instead, GA will rely on the fact that users are logging into various services via their Google accounts, and therefore are returning to GA via a logged-in session.

However, this means that some one-and-done visits will no longer register on GA.

This means that users will not need to login in order for their actions to be tracked

In early March, Google announced that it would be changing the way that user data is tracked by Google Analytics. Currently, when a user logs into their account on a website and performs an action, that action is attributed to their account.

This attribution stays for up to five hours, meaning that if they logged in at 1 p.m., any actions taken after 1:05 p.m. would not be attributed to them.

Google is removing this time restriction, making it so that actions are attributed to the correct user for the whole day. This is a big change and one that will take some time to implement across all websites.

According to Google’s post, the new policy will take effect on May 20 and be enforced by default on August 20.

Users who are logged into their Google account when viewing a website with Google Analytics will have their data merged with the data of other users who are also logged into their Google accounts while viewing the same website

As of March 2019, Google Analytics will be able to tell the difference between users who are logged into their Google accounts and those who are not. This is a big deal as it means that user data will no longer be merged.

Previously, all users accessing a website through Google Analytics were considered separate users, even if they were logged into their Google accounts. This meant that there was no way to distinguish between different users unless they were not logged into their Google accounts.

Merging of profiles will end on March 1, 2020, so you have some time to make the transition. After this date, all user data from non-personalized profiles will be merged into one profile.

Sessions will no longer exist in Google Analytics by default

In February 2018, Google announced that it will be changing the way sessions are recorded in Google Analytics. By May 2018, all GA accounts will be switched to the new default session model.

This is a significant change, as it will no longer record unique visits to your website by the same user. The old model tracked a session as beginning when a user first navigated to a page on your site and ending when they next navigated away from your site.

Any subsequent visits by that user within a short period of time would be recorded as separate sessions. This is no longer the case, and GA users have been given plenty of time to adjust!

There are two types of sessions: persistent and transient. Persistent sessions last for more than one day, while transient sessions do not.

This makes it harder for marketers to analyze user behavior by session

In November 2017, Google announced plans to make it harder for marketers to identify user behavior via Google Analytics. By February 2019, they plan to implement this change by default.

Google Analytics uses a feature called “pure” (formerly known as persistent) sessions. This is when the analytics service is able to identify separate sessions by the same user.

By February 2019, pure sessions will be the default setting for new accounts created on the platform. However, older accounts can opt-out of this change and keep using persistent sessions.

The issue with pure sessions is that other users can navigate out of their own account and onto someone else’s account without it being registered as a new session. This makes it harder for marketers to analyze user behavior by session.

Users tend to stay on websites longer than they used to, which makes session-based analysis less accurate

As websites have improved their design and features, users have increased the length of time they spend on a single website.

People use their favorite sites for longer periods of time, whether it’s for news, shopping, or entertainment. Even for sites like Amazon, people stay on the site to read reviews, look at recommendations, and browse products.

The average user stays on a website for approximately eight minutes now, which is up from four minutes in 2014. This is according to a study by Harvard Business School Professor Rui Zhu cited by MarketingProfs.

The increase in user retention has made it more difficult to identify individual user sessions on most websites. People stay on the site so long that the session timeout kicks in and they are forced to sign in again.

Google hopes to address this issue with the new GA Universal version that will be required in October.
