The Warlocks
The Warlocks were one of the most successful bands of the 1970s and 1980s that fused elements of funk, disco, and psychedelic music.
Their debut album, III, went gold and spawned two major hit singles, One Electric Night and We Are Everything. One Electric Night peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and We Are Everything reached number one on both the R&B and pop charts.
We Are Everything was a critical success as well earning a spot on many year-end best-of lists. The song was also a medium to high school textbook study material due to its beautiful imagery and complex emotions.
One reason The Warlocks were so successful was that they capitalized on their popularity during the era. They signed contracts with management companies that knew how to market them, which led to more successful followups.
Jefferson Airplane
Moby Grape were one of the first bands to fuse elements of funk and psychedelic rock, creating one of the most recognizable musical styles in history.
The band was formed in 1972 in Sacramento, California by guitarist Greg Nelson and bassist Greg Norton, who had met while studying at University of Northern California. The two had been playing music together since they were teenagers, developing their career as members of local bands like The Vibrations and The Vibration Of Sound.
In 1974, they joined forces with drummer Jim Ostermuller and guitarist Terry Moore to form the band Fritz Leiber & Illieude, named after a sword-and-sorcery novel by Leiber and an acoustic recording by Moore.
After briefly changing their name to Fritz Leiber & Illieud before settling on Moby Grape, the group recorded their debut album LPs In The Moonlight And In Dawn for Reprise Records in 1975.

Moby Grape’s 1969 debut album Unknown Mortal Male was one of the first Funk/Psychedelic albums to sell a lot of copies and gain mainstream attention. Since then, other funk/psychedelic bands have gained popularity, including The Cars and Tower Of Power.
The Velvet Underground
The velvet underground was a powerful and influential force in the late 60s and early 70s. Made up of four musicians, Paul Westerman, Nico, Lou Reed, and Jurgen Drews-Kloppett fused rock with darkness to create The Velvet Underground.
The group released two albums for Columbia Records before being dropped due to poor sales. Despite this, The Velvet Underground is one of the most famous bands in the history of music. Their influence can still be felt today as fans continue to re-evaluate their favorites as of late.
The band’s second album was much more successful than their first and led to a career for many musicians.
Parliament Funkadelic
