Figurative language is a way to describe things that are not literal. It is not a specific word or phrase, but rather how words and phrases are used.
Figurative language can be in the form of allusions, metaphors, similes, puns, and ironic or sarcastic statements. These come in many forms and are used frequently throughout literature.
This quiz will test your ability to recognize figurative language in Flannery O’Connor’s short story “A Good Country People.” We will look at several excerpts from the text and identify which type of figurative language is used.
Allusions are references to a person, place, or thing outside of the text. metaphors are describing one thing as another thing that has similar qualities. Similes are comparing one thing to another thing using the word “like” or “as.” Puns are exploiting words with two meanings to create a humorous effect. Ironeous statements twist the meaning of words to create a different meaning.
“You know what I mean,” Haze said.
In this excerpt, figurative language is used in multiple places. The first instance of figurative language is in the quote above.
By saying, “You know what I mean,” Haze implied that the other person knew what she was talking about, or that she agreed with her. This is a very common thing to say, and it is how our everyday conversations perpetuate racism.
By saying you know what they mean, you are assuming they are the same race as you, or that you have the same understanding of a situation. This puts people of color at a disadvantage because they may be misunderstood.
Another instance of figurative language in this excerpt is when Haze says she will put on her Sunday clothes and go to church. By saying this, she is implying that she will pretend to be someone else for a short time. This puts into play the concept of theater and drama, both of which are heavily used in Christianity.
“I don’t know what you mean,” she said.
This is a very common trope, and almost always indicates deception. By saying she does not know what you mean, the character is denying that she knows something that is being implied.
You can see this used in many films, especially in the romantic comedy genre. The female lead will say she does not know what you mean when her love interest implies that she likes him. This is because she does like him, and she is trying to keep up a facade.
In this case, Hazel uses it to her advantage to keep herself from getting hurt. She knows that he likes her, but doesn’t realize that she likes him too until it is too late. It ends up being part of the reason why she leaves soon after. He ends up finding someone else and loves him, so she leaves to protect her heart.
“You know you put your hand on my leg,” he said.
This quote is an example of personification, which is assigning human traits to nonhuman things. In this case, Joy’s leg is being talked to and accused of being flirtatious. Legs cannot do this on their own, so it is the person doing the accusing that gives this trait to the leg.
Personification can be very subtle or quite obvious. Many times, it is used subtly to add a bit of flair to a sentence. It can be anyone of the five senses or something more abstract like personality or emotion.
There are many ways to identify personification in a sentence. The easiest way is to think about what the word means and look for it in the sentence. You can also check for adjectives and verbs, as these are often what give qualities to things in a sentence.
She looked down at her shoes.6) She looked up and down again and then smiled slightly.
This is an example of personification, where a non-living thing is given human-like qualities. In this case, Ireland is given the quality of being beautiful. Being named the “Good” Country also adds to this as a country can be considered a person.
Personification can be used in many ways. One way is to describe a place or thing as if it were a person. Another way is to give things characteristics that most people associate with people.
Heidi Brown writes for Writer’s Digest that “[p]ersonification makes things seem more alive, more real. It can add depth and evoke emotion in your reader, which are key elements in creating a story world your readers care about.
