Commenting on other people’s posts and stories is a great way to get involved in the Facebook world. It gives you an opportunity to share your thoughts and opinions, network, and connect with people.
Commenting can be fun, but it can also be intimidating. It takes some skill to create a thoughtful comment that does not come off as offensive, crass, or rude.
With this article, you will learn how to properly comment on Facebook so that you gain the most visibility for your comment and do not offend anyone. We will go over the best times to comment, how to tag people in comments, and how to create a meaningful comment.
Type your comment
Next, type your comment. You can type your comment in the text box at the top of the post, or in the message box at the bottom of the post.
If you choose to type your comment in the top text box, be sure to leave room for someone to respond to you with a comment of their own. Facebook will not let you do this if you do not leave enough space.
Once you have typed your comment, click enter to post it! You can also choose to delete your comment before posting if you change your mind.
Facebook will ask you to confirm your comment is yours. This is so that people cannot impersonate you and say things that are not true. Make sure it is yours and then confirm it!
You can also reply to comments on Facebook, just like on any other site. If someone comments on your post, they will get a notification confirming they have commented.
Press Enter to post your comment
Once you have entered your comment, you will be asked to enter your name and email. This is so Facebook can verify that you are a real person and not a bot making fake comments.
However, you can enter a fake name and email if you would like to remain anonymous. You will then be able to post your comment!
You can also comment on older posts if you have read them. You have the option to click on older posts so that you do not have to read the whole post before commenting.
You can also hide your comments by clicking on the arrow next to the Post button and selecting Hide Commenting. This is useful if you do not want others to see that you commented on a post.
Commenting is a way to engage with people on Facebook who share similar interests with you.
Click the drop-down menu next to the “Comment” button
Next, you need to click the drop-down menu next to the “Comment” button. This is located directly below the post, and to the right of the social media icons.
This menu has several options that allow you to add a comment without having to enter the entire comment field. These include:
Adding an emoticon or smiley face
Adding a location
Adding a question or answer to a question asked in the post
Clicking on any of these will add them into the comments field, so you do not have to re-type them.
If you would like to write a longer comment, then select “Write something else” and type away!
Whether you choose to click on one of the quick additions, or type it all out yourself, your comment will be accepted and posted on your friend’s Facebook page.
Choose which comment thread you want to reply to
Once you are in the Facebook app, you can navigate to the comments by tapping the post and scrolling down. You can also tap the three dots on the top right of the post and select View Comments to get to the comments.
Here you can see all of the comments left on this post. Once you are in this section, you have two options: you can comment on an existing comment thread by pressing the New Comment button, or you can add a new comment by posting a new message.
You can also see who has commented by looking at the names next to the green Post buttons. You can choose to comment on someone else’s comment or add your own!
There is also an option at the top right that says Go to Link. Clicking this will take you away from the specific thread and back to the original post. This is useful if you want to read other comments.
Start typing the person’s name who you are replying to
Once you have entered the thread, you can start commenting. To comment on a post or photo, click the speech bubble next to the like button.
On posts, this opens a thread where you can comment on the original post as well as other people’s comments. On photos, this opens a chat where you can only comment on the photo.
When you start typing the person’s name who you are replying to, it will auto-fill their name. Press enter and your comment will be posted!
This is a good way to make sure that you are commenting on the right person. Naming them in your comment will also make it easier for them to find your response in their notifications.
You can also reply to multiple people by typing their names and pressing enter.
Press Enter when you are finished posting your reply
Now it is time to add your comment to the original post. Once again, click the gray speech bubble next to the original post, and a new box will appear.
This time, type your comment in the text box, and then press enter. Your comment will now appear underneath the original post. Congratulations, you just commented on Facebook!
You can still see the original poster’s name, but now you are able to add your own thoughts. Your comments will also be visible to everyone who views the post.
It is important to note that you can only comment on posts that you have access to – you cannot comment on private posts unless you are someone in the group or already have access to it. You also cannot comment on posts that are restricted to certain groups.

Click on the person’s name you are commenting on
Once you are on the post, click on the person’s name you are commenting on. This brings up their profile, where you can write your comment.
You can also add a comment to someone else’s comment if there is a conversation happening around the post. You can do this by clicking the smiley face in the top right corner and selecting Add Comment.
If there is a photo being discussed, you can click the photo to bring it up full screen and add your thoughts about it. It is also possible to add a video to your comment, which can be done by clicking the camera icon in the top right corner.
When adding a comment, it is best to keep it short and sweet. People will read what you have to say, but if it goes too far down the page, it may get overlooked.
Start typing your comment underneath their post
Once you have clicked on the comment button, a small box will appear under the post. Here, you can start typing your comment.
As soon as you begin to type, other users can see that you left a comment and can leave their own comments under yours. This allows for conversations to form around the post.
You can also scroll down to see what other people have commented on and add to the conversation that way. You can also hide comments you do not want to see until you do by switching off the show more option next to the comment count. This keeps the comments organized and neat.
If someone has made a negative or offensive comment on a post, you can either report them or hide their comment using the report and hide buttons at the bottom of their comment.
