A filter is an artistic effect that you can apply to your saved pictures or videos with Snapchat. They are like stickers, except they do not stay on the picture for very long!
Some filters are more popular than others, which is why some people have made tutorials about how to remove them better than others. Some of these filters are really hard to get rid of, so here I will go over some easy ways to remove most filters from your snaps.
Removing fake mustaches is one of my favorite things to do on Snapchat. Not only does it make you look funny, but it also adds a little bit of fun to what would otherwise be a serious snap.
However, sometimes someone sends you a quick message saying something along the lines of “You’re ugly without your mustache” or “Stop being such a pussy, grow a mustache!” It may feel hurtful at first, but then you realize it is just their way of saying goodbye.
That is when the trick comes in- You can easily create your own fake mustache by drawing around the area where the mouth of the mustache should be. Then, simply color in the shape and add some texture to make it seem more realistic.
Open the photo in Photoshop or another photo editing program
Another way to remove a filter is to open the picture in a computer software such as Adobe Photoshop. You can do this by going into your smartphone or tablet app store to find it, or you can use Google to look up how to access Photoshop online.
Once you have found the tool, you will need to choose “Photoshop” from the settings category. Then, under The Tools panel, click on Camera Raw. This option is usually hidden so make sure you have show all tools before clicking here!
After opening the camera raw interface, locate the Adjustment Layer section at the bottom of the screen. Here, you will be able to add new layers which you can apply different effects to.
Find the filters section and look through each one to see if there are any that you recognize. If there are not, tap on Create New Effect and pick something else!
Your final result should look almost exactly like the original image! Keep in mind though that these changes may slightly darken the photo due to the setting being darker.
Find the filter you want to remove
Finding the right way to remove a Snapchat filter from a saved picture is very dependent on what type of filter it is! There are two main ways that people have different success in removing these filters.
One is by going into the app, finding the specific person or profile that added the filter, and then deleting their account. This removes the source of the filter so if they re-create the same filter, it will not show up automatically.
The other option is to go into your device’s settings and search for “Snapchat.” Some users start off doing this until they find the correct section to look under.
Once there, look through each item under “Apps using my camera and microphone” and make sure that nothing has been checked as allowed. If one has, close out completely and see if that helps.
Select the area of the photo that the filter is on
The first step in removing a Snapchat filter from a saved picture is to make sure you have enough detail in your pictures before applying the filter!
If you are trying to remove a water effect or beach texture filter, making your image longer will not work! You need to have at least one more second than what it already is before applying the filter so there’s no proof that you spent time editing the picture.
The same goes for ghost effects like ones where you see part of the person’s face but they aren’t looking into the camera, those can be removed by adding some extra padding to their face.
Hit delete or backspace
If you want to remove a filter that is not part of an already saved picture, then hit the Delete or Backspace button next to it. The first time you do this, it will ask if you are sure you want to get rid of the filter.
It will also tell you how many times it has been pressed for other users to see the removed filter. This helps prevent people from being able to use the tool to make fake pictures.
Once you have confirmed that you no longer desire the added feature, the filter will be completely deleted and you can save the image as normal.
Re-apply the original photo filter
It is very easy to remove a saved Snapchat filter from an already filtered picture. Simply open the image in another app, re-apply the original filter, and then save it!
You can do this by going into the original chat or video stream where the picture was shared and applying the same filter there. If you have no way of accessing that chat, you can simply create a new conversation and apply there!
This works because when you originally applied the filter, your phone automatically uploaded a copy of the setting onto its servers. Now that you have removed the filter, those settings are no longer linked to that user, so they cannot be reapplied.
Removing fake filters
It is also possible to add extra touches to made up filters. For example, if someone has ‘selfie’ as their profile pictures, sometimes people will use another filter called ‘noise selfie’. This adds some background texture to make the photograph look more interesting.
By looking through various applications, you may be able to find one that actually contains the said noise self thing.
Share the photo to Snapchat
When you have found your favorite filter, you will want to save it or create an account so that you can add it to other users’ stories. To do this, you must first share the picture from where you saved it on social media sites such as Instagram or Facebook.
After sharing the image, send it directly to Snapchat by clicking the link under Messages in Settings. Then, choose Save to use this app to view the picture later. You cannot access the picture using another app like Google Chrome while it is still online.
If you find the filter annoying, you can remove it completely! Simply go into Settings, then Privacy, and look for Recent Apps. Here, look through and see if there are any filters you did not activate before. If so, simply click Delete and they will no longer be available.
Take photos and edit them the same way
If you are ever needing to remove a filter or add a new one, take some time to do it in the same manner as when you put the filter there!
If you have found this tip helpful, then make sure to share it with your friends for more ways to customize their pictures. They can learn how to use Photoshop, another popular editing software.
And if they find this trick useful, leave a comment and let them know who taught you.
Practice removing filters to get better at it
There is no hard and fast rule for how long you have to use a filter before replacing it with nothing, but your chances of success are higher if you practice.
Practice as such a small part of the painting process that it becomes invisible! Replacing a background element like this helps make the image feel seamless and natural.
By practicing ahead of time, you will be more prepared for when someone sends you or adds a filter to a picture. The best way to do this is by taking some test photos – maybe ones with already-existing filters that you can look up how to remove them from.
You could also take pictures outside so there’s not too much going on in the scene.
